Our Story

Green Fields Nursery began as a small grower of unique plants in the neighborhood of Mount Washington in 1923. August Dubbert shared his cuttings and knowledge of plants with his neighbors and friends. In the early 1940’s, land became available at the corner of Falls Road and Northern Parkway. Mr. Dubbert purchased this prime piece of land from the city and established Dubbert’s Green Fields Nursery as a retail florist and plant nursery. The business grew and developed a reputation for unique plant stock. In fact, August Dubbert popularized Aucuba japonica ‘Variegata’, a cultivar originally deemed not hardy in the area.

The business was passed on to his knowledgeable son, Louis Dubbert. Green Fields continued to grow under Lou’s guidance and launched a successful residential and commercial landscape business. Lou’s particular expertise was growing and hybridizing daylilies to be sold at the nursery. In 1986, Green Fields was purchased by Jim McElroy and his father-in-law, Jerry Dobbyn. A period of immense growth and change followed at the nursery. Jim subsequently became sole proprietor in 1995.

General manager Peter Bieneman joined the company in 1988 while a student at Loyola University. Pete’s knowledge and love for plants was recognized early on. In 2001 he earned his Masters of Landscape Architecture from Morgan State University. Nursery manager and designer John Russell joined our team in 2002. Major renovations to the site in 2005 added two large showrooms which have given the nursery year-round retail capability. Green Fields continues to function as a full-service retail garden center and landscaping company.
