Caring for a Cut Christmas Tree
Your freshly cut Christmas tree can stay fresh and beautiful throughout the holiday season with proper care. Follow these steps to maintain your tree:
1. Prepare the Tree Before Bringing It Inside
Trim the Base: Cut ½ to 1 inch off the bottom of the trunk to remove dried sap and improve water absorption. If you are picking your tree up at the nursery, our staff will give your tree a fresh cut before loading it onto your car. Be sure to get the tree into water within 24 hours. If we are delivering or setting up your tree, our staff will wait until we arrive at your home to give the fresh cut to ensure your tree stays fresh all season long!
Shake Off Debris: Gently shake the tree to remove loose needles and debris.
Hydrate Immediately: Use warm water to fill your stand after bringing your tree inside. Place the tree in a bucket of water if you're not setting it up right away. Keep it in a cool, shaded area until you bring it inside.
2. Set Up the Tree
Use a Sturdy Tree Stand: Choose a stand that holds at least one gallon of water and fits the trunk without shaving down its sides.
Place Away From Heat: Position the tree away from heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces, or direct sunlight to prevent drying out.
Secure Properly: Ensure the tree is upright and stable to avoid tipping.
3. Water the Tree Regularly
Check Daily: Keep the water level above the base of the trunk. A freshly cut tree can absorb up to a gallon of water in the first 24 hours. Warm water is best. We recommend adding a splash of Prolong each time you fill up your stand.
Refill as Needed: Never let the water level drop below the trunk, as a dry base will seal up and prevent further water absorption. Prolong will help to keep your tree from sealing.
